The job of a crane operator in a production or construction company is important. Without their skills, businesses who are in need of transporting heavy loads would be difficult. That is why it is a must for this business to get a qualified one. And even if you have the right man for the job, you need to ensure that he/she remember these crucial pointers to ensure the safe use of the EOT cranes:
- Inspect the cranes before use
It is imperative for crane operators to do equipment inspection before they use the equipment. This is to check if the equipment is working and whether it is safe for use. OSHA requires companies and personnel involve in the equipment usage to do regular inspections – from daily inspections to monthly check ups. Be sure to update the log books about the current condition and possible problems they encounter and while using the equipment.
- Watch out for the warning signal
Even though the equipment looks good upon inspection, there is always a chance of it breaking down during work or while being used. The crane operator should always keep an eye on the warning signal. Once the machine signals a breakdown or a possible engine failure. The operator should immediately order work stoppage and inform his/her superiors. Using the equipment that is in questionable condition can lead to total engine failure or accidents.
- Make sure only authorized person will use the equipment
Allowing an unauthorized person to use and operate the crane is not only unethical but also dangerous. Operating a crane needs to skills and training. Before an operator can lay his/her hands on the equipment, he/she needs to undergo a couple of training and be certified. Without proper training, a person might damage the equipment and cause accidents in the workplace.
- Check the position of the load
Correct loading position is important in crane operation. The operator must ensure that the load is correctly positioned before he/she transport it to the next location. He/she also needs to watch out for the maximum loading capacity. Loading beyond what is prescribed can potentially damage the equipment and will also compromise the safety of the people working inside the facility.
- Do not use unsafe equipment
Once a crane is branded unsafe, never attempt to use it, no matter how urgent the work is. The crane operator must ensure that the equipment will be scheduled for repair and replacement and no work should be done unless the equipment is given a clean bill of health.
